National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad was founded by Sir Robert McCarrison in the year 1918 as ‘Beri-Beri’ Enquiry Unit in a single room laboratory at the Pasteur Institute at Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. In a short span of seven years, the unit flourished as a "Nutrition Research Initiative" and later in 1928, emerged as "Nutrition Research Laboratories" (NRL) with Dr. McCarrison as its first Director. It was transferred to Hyderabad in the year 1958. During its gold jubilee in 1969, it was renamed the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad.
National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad has received worldwide recognition for its pioneering studies in various aspects of healthy eating research, with particular reference to protein-energy malnutrition (PEM). The activities of the institution are broadly based, covering all areas of food and nutrition. NIN, Hyderabad has achieved close integration in its research activities between the laboratory, the clinic and the community.
Emphasis has shifted to problem-oriented research, with the goal of finding practical solutions to the problems of nutrition that can be used within the existing socio-economic framework. The National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad during its glorious 100 years of service to the nation, has a remarkable record of success in the treatment of a number of foodborne illnesses for our people.

National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad has state-of-the-art equipment and well-equipped modern facilities as well as medical, laboratory and community research facilities. Healthy Eating Wards with adequate inpatient and outpatient wards are available at Niloufer Women and Children's Hospital, State Maternity Hospital and Osmania General Hospital for research on healthy eating. The Institute's library, which is full of books and journals, is considered one of the best science libraries in India. In addition, computer resources are available to analyse complex data and retrieval information on the site. The institute's "Nutrition Museum" is an important teaching tool that highlights various aspects of food and nutrition and integrates the work done at the Centre.
The library at National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad addresses the literature needs and information of the Institute and other Research Organizations, Home Science, Medical Colleges and a large number of nutritionists. The library has always played an important role in reference activities by providing information services such as MEDLINE Search, Proquest Medical Library Full Text Database of journals and other online retrieval services using the LAN Network. The library participates in the exchange of data, journals and information using the URL.
The library is also a member of the ERMED Consortia of National Medical Library, New Delhi provided by ICMR to access E-Journals Online Registration for 4 Core journals such as LANCET, NATURE, NEJM, SCIENCE updated by ICMR is also accessible.
The library began with the collection and development of printed / unpublished media from 1959 and has now grown into a Poly-media-based Information Centre. Installed in a large building, the library can accommodate more than 100 users. The NIN Library is the centre of three other institutions on the same campus namely the Food and Drug Toxicology Research Centre (FDTRC), the National Veterinary Laboratory (NCLAS) and the National Nutrition Monitoring Bureau (NNMB).
The library has more than 18,082 books, 37,543 binding journals, 13,371 reports, 383 foreign and Indian journals, and an equal number of Books, Popular Magazines etc. free / exchange.
The National Institute of Nutrition, Hyderabad has modest accommodation facilities to offer to the participants of the training programmes as well as the discerning guests.Dr.V.N.Patwardhan Student's Hostel is the place where participants of the training courses are usually accommodated. The Hostel is set in the lush green environs of the Institute and is proximate to the main building, labs and the library. With all the required amenities and cordial service staff, the hostel is a home away from home for those who stay here.
